We women have a lot to learn about simplifying our lives. We have to decide what is important and then move along at a pace that is comfortable for us. We have to develop the maturity to stop trying to prove something. We have to learn to be content with what we are." ~Marjorie Pay Hinckley~

Thibido Park Reset Adventure Day. A happy spot in my heart forever.

The answer is always the same. When life gets stressful, head to the woods. Yet I'm amazed each and every time that it works. And feel grateful for the sweet little memories we build together. Especially when I let him lead and I just let the adventure unravel. On this day he rode his bike down a steep hill, made it, and discovered a whole new area to explore.

Happy Presidents Day

Went to the beach today for Family Home Evening. Dug a little, walked a bit, saw a dead dog, made a fire in our washbin, roasted bratwursts & marshmallows, stayed warm.Jill & the girls joined us. The kids made torches out of sticks. Lukas held his up and began singing the Olympic theme song, and all were fascinated with blowing on the end to make it glow brighter. Nobody got burned, injured or impaled. It was a good day. The ocean cures everything.

Reading with Papa

Maybe it's because he was a German Literature PhD candidate. Maybe it's because he was educated in another country where he was challenged to read lots of intriguing books. Maybe it's because he likes to cuddle with an adoring 4 year old son who loves books. Maybe it's because we're both educators and see the massive influence that reading with our child has on his ability to learn vocabulary, grammar, good morals, sequencing skills, and a myriad of other academic markers . In any case, we love this time of day. I've heard it said that books are honey for a child's soul. I'm working on a project to list the hundreds and hundreds of books we've read with Lukas since turning 4, including dozens of the Great Illustrated Classics. I don't remember ever reading The Count of Monte Cristo or Ivanhoe as a kid, but I've loved reading them with Lukas!

Happy Valentines Day

Lukas went to the playgroup Vday party while I sped down to LaJolla and back for a Dr's appointment. He got to hand out his superhero valentines to all of his friends and play at the playground. Love his excitement for giving.

And as per tradition, he found a heart shaped box of Valentine Chocolates at his place at the table, and we made heart shaped pancakes. This year, since we're in SD, we cruised down to the beach for some R & R. It was chilly but beautiful. And then this crazy thick fog just rolled in, and within minutes we could barely see our kid on the beach!!! Crazy! It was like standing in a cloud and breathing through a nebulizer!

Olympic Fever

2014 Olympics in Sochi (Mother Russia) came with protests, oppression, and struggles. Vladimir Putin, the leader of Russia, was criticized for his politics(anti gay laws plus the killing of the native peoples upon which lands the games are being played) and the country was mocked for some goof ups (lights out, water issues), but the athletes were able to focus enough to win some amazing victories.  We watched a few of the huge snowboarding competitions and a few ice skaters.

In our house, we had a major dose of John William's Olympic music, and even created some Olympic events. The painters tape, in fact, is still gracing the living room's floor, but since there's no pressing need to remove it, it remains.

Eli and Azi-pants

When life is rough and throws you storms, friends are like buoys that you can hang onto while in their presence. And when a friend visits, and we can catch up and create memories, it's like the balm of Gilead for the soul. When Amy came to visit with the kiddos, we were ecstatic. We met at Oceanside Harbor and the kids seemed to pick right up where they left off. They grew up together for awhile in Davis, CA in Orchard Park Family Housing. Lukas and Azilee were in nursery together. They're about a month apart. We stayed at the Bell Grandparents home when we adopted Lukas in San Diego, and Amy was my go-to with any and all baby questions when we got back up to Davis. We met when we sewed our first Christmas tree-skirts together, and I've adored her since. We even got to visit them on a road trip to Utah, and the kids were so excited to see each other. And this time was sweet too. I adore them. And the funniest thing about this third picture is that a huge wave splooshed up onto the jetty and soaked Eli to the bone. It was inevitable...the kids getting wet. Lukas began in a coat and pants and ended...well.... you see the pictures. At one point he was in the ocean wearing a raincoat. IN the ocean water. Hahahaha.  Azi's pretty amazing at gymnastics and she and her mom did handstands and cartwheels on the beach. I hadn't seen Una since she was a baby! She's such a little girl now! We bonded over snacks. haha. Lukas and Azilee explored the rocks together, kicking the incoming surf. Amy is my darling hippie friend who is smart, fun, crafty, talented, and super interesting to talk to, a great mom who is intentional in what she does with and for her kids.  We relate to life's craziness, and the awkwardness of BYU, among other things. This day was a breath of fresh air. And much too short.  I can't believe I have no picture of us together!!! Thanks for a wonderful and fulfilling day. I wish I could take every dear friend of mine and transplant them to San Diego. Could I just buy a big house and invite everyone to live there??!!!
